Active Learning for Busy One-Year-Olds
In our Ones classroom, children are always on the move—walking, climbing, exploring, and learning how the world works through trial and error. At this age, children learn best through hands-on experiences, imitation, and active play, so our teachers plan the day around meaningful opportunities to move, explore, and communicate.
The Creative Curriculum emphasizes discovery and emerging independence. Teachers support one-year-olds as they begin to use words, follow simple directions, and participate in routines. Through sensory activities, music, and open-ended materials, children build confidence, curiosity, and a growing sense of self as they start to understand the world around them.
How We Support Emerging Independence
Teachers model simple words and phrases, read short stories, sing songs, and respond to gestures and early words. Children practice naming objects, making choices, and using their voices to be understood.
The classroom offers safe spaces for walking, climbing, pushing, and carrying. Gross- and fine-motor activities help toddlers build balance, strength, and coordination throughout the day.

A Structured Yet Flexible Day
Our Ones Program follows a structured yet flexible daily rhythm that gives one-year-olds the security of routine while leaving plenty of room for active exploration. The day typically includes arrival and warm connection with teachers, morning circle with songs and simple games, indoor learning centers and sensory exploration, snacks and early self-help routines, outdoor play and gross-motor practice, story time and quiet choices, and rest periods that match the needs of busy toddlers.

Is the Ones classroom combined with Twos?
Yes. Our Ones group is closely connected with our Twos program, allowing children to learn alongside slightly older peers when appropriate while still receiving age-appropriate expectations and support.
